Judith Lowery
I studied a BA Craft Degree (wood, metal, ceramics and textiles) some 30 years ago and have spent the interim years teaching and giving priority to the development of creativity within my students rather than developing pieces of my own Art.
Following an evaluation of my working life and challenges connected to my health I decided to step away from teaching in schools and now focus on my own Art production whilst also running painting and drawing workshops.
My pieces are largely inspired by my cycling journeys throughout Monmouthshire, the Welsh mountains and The Forest of Dean. I have always gained a sense of peace when cycling perhaps fuelled by the combination of the physical challenge this presents coupled with the joy of the views when travelling at the slower pace the bicycle affords. I find myself drawn to small fragments of scenery reflective of the character of the landscape around me and of course animals within said landscape. The act of the physical production of any piece of Art or Craft is I believe an important aspect of why I need to create, Art for me is not just about the visual aesthetics of what I produce but the joy I get from feeling the application of media on the surface or, when constructing, feeling the materials within my hands.
