Painting
Jane has been painting and drawing all her life. She graduated from Loughborough in Fine Art in 1983. With a Post Graduate Teaching Certificate from Goldsmiths, Jane has spent the best part of her career as a teacher of Art. Her first love with paint has been landscape and she has a real fondness for the sea and mountains of Wales. ‘ I am interested in the play of light on surfaces, whether that is the texture and colour of cake or the light reflecting off water, sea and landscape’. The exploration of light on a surface underpins all her work , whatever the subject or scale.
Working mainly on wooden panels, Jane has really enjoyed using oil paint as a medium to portray all aspects of the world around her. Her paintings are often small and intimate in scale , evoking memory of seasons with glimpses of light through trees, on rocks and against dark skies. I also love the small and delicate aspects of the natural world, little pebbles, feathers, wild flowers, orchids and eggshells, finding the detail challenging and inspiring.
Ceramics
Working with semi porcelain, Jane has developed a range of products from glow bowl tea light holders to ring and earring jewellery dishes. She has enjoyed the challenges of working with semi-porcelain, producing bubble under glazes in rich turquoise, rose and blue. Adding gold or silver leaf gilding to the inside and edges of her dishes has made these little gems feel very precious. Recently added to her range are little spoons and salt dishes as well as star and round trinket dishes.
‘Inspired by the natural shapes found in nature, my porcelain ceramics are small and delicate ring dishes. Using my own moulds I shape and hand- pinch the clay to create crimped edges reflecting those of a flower petal or shell. I enjoy working with oxides and under glazes to add the splashes of blue or green and pink so effective on white. I then use a transparent glaze over the top before finishing each dish with gilded silver or gold. In my latest range I have been exploring a double bubble under glaze adding further depth to my pieces. I have also been experimenting with scale, producing studio pieces that I call my Flow bowls.. These are all formed from a much larger plaster mould and then individually shaped whilst the clay is still malleable.
