Griff had a successful international engineering career in both the coal mining and oil and gas exploration industries. He took early retirement to live in beautiful Mid Wales where he enjoys fly fishing for Salmon, Trout and Grayling (with his own hand tied flies). He lives in Builth Wells beside the River Irfon close to it’s junction with the River Wye. He has had a number of Brooch commissions including tying 150 Salmon Fly brooches as place settings for a wedding.
He started fly fishing and tying fishing flies 10 years ago and is largely self-taught. He has fished in Wales Scotland Ireland and the chalk streams of southern England successfully using his own hand made flies.
The Brooches are all based on traditional salmon flies and are hand tied in exactly the same way as fly used for fishing. They are generally robust and last a significant period of time. They can be washed in water and dried using a cool hair dryer blowing back from the hook eye which restores the fly to original condition.
The brooches are tied utilising traditional materials where available, however for some feathers which are now difficult to obtain substitutes are used. Seals fur has been replaced with a man-made fibre containing a UV material which enhances the brooch.
